Spellian has given me the opportunity to improve my Spanish and also to befriend a native Spanish person. Every week we speak for about 30 minutes over videocall with the support of prompted questions and example answers, on topics that are part of the GCSE, so perfect for the exam. Furthermore, it has allowed me to improve my spontaneity and my fluency as I am able to extend the conversation to common interests me and my partner share. The programme is very unique and like nothing I’ve ever seen before as you get the real life experience of speaking with a native speaker similar to your age, something that is difficult to achieve within the classroom
I found Spellian an incredible experience! Being able to talk to a native Spanish speaker each week and talk about topics both related to the curriculum and more casual topics helped my fluency to an extent that I couldn't believe. At the beginning of the year, I sometimes found it difficult to formulate sentences but now I find myself thinking in Spanish without even realising. The weekly topics are insightful and it's nice to talk to a Spaniard about both their culture and British culture to learn about their opinions whilst practising at the same time. My speaking partner and the Spellian team were incredibly helpful, respectively being able to rearrange a session or correct my blunders, and sort out technical issues whenever they arose. If you are hesitant about taking part in the Spellian programme, I think that you should take this one of a kind opportunity.
Taking part in Spellian has really improved my confidence in my ability to communicate in Spanish - it covers listening, reading and speaking all in one! The regular practice with someone your own age means you have a friend who helps and corrects you in a way that is not intimidating at all - and you get to help them too in the English sections! There are so many topics covered which will expand your knowledge of Spanish cultures and will give you some very interesting ideas to talk about in your own speaking!
My partner is always really helpful, politely correcting me when I get something wrong and giving me suggestions if I am unsure what to say or how to express something in Spanish. We get on well and having her as a partner has made the experience really enjoyable. We often have spontaneous conversations in English or Spanish at the start/end of the call, which is a good way for us to become used to less structured conversation formats, but also great to get to know each other better. When I have had to reschedule on multiple occasions, she has been very accommodating and always replies as soon as she can to my emails.

She has helped me to realise that sometimes the hardest part is just to start as, once I got chatting to her, I soon realised that speaking in a different language was not as daunting as I first believed it to be. She has always supported me with my Spanish learning and I feel I have improved so much, and I owe that to her.
