Values

Through regular conversations with a student from another country, our participants develop linguistic and intercultural knowledge while growing in confidence, maturity, and understanding of others. These are the values at the heart of Spellian:

Inclusiveness

Every young person should have the opportunity to acquire a foreign language and learn about other cultures, and we believe that the best way to do this is through meaningful connections with other young people around the world.

Spellian brings together students from different countries, backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, helping them learn with and from one another.

Inclusiveness also means ensuring that financial circumstances are never a barrier to participation. The fees paid by participants cover only a small fraction of the true cost of running the programme, and we offer free subscriptions to students who would otherwise be unable to take part for financial reasons.

Tolerance and Open-Mindedness

By speaking regularly with their partner abroad, students learn to appreciate different perspectives and experiences. They realise than what we have in common is much more than what differentiate us, and that despite there might be more than one way of thinking, this just enrich us if we approach differences with curiosity and tolerance.

Our participants realise that understanding others begins with listening openly and without prejudice. By doing so they’ll develop empathy, respect, tolerance, and a deeper appreciation of cultural diversity.

Curiosity

Curiosity is at the heart of language learning. Every conversation encourages students to ask questions, explore new ideas, and learn about different ways of living, celebrating, and seeing the world. The more curious we are, the more we learn, discover what they have in common, and celebrate what makes each of them unique.

Kindness

We firmly believe that we all need to treat people with kindness, always, no excuse. In fact, one of the first resources that our participants do everybody should trkindness can sort our favourite word. At Spellian we love kindness, Our motto is “Together we learn” and our participants are expected to encourage and help each other learn through kindness.

By being patient, supportive, and respectful, students create a genuine community of practice in which learning occurs in a natural way, by listening and talking to their partner.

We also aim to help our participants cope better when They’ll also develop a better resilience versus frustration. Things sometimes are not what we’d like or expect, and some people become easily frustrated or angry.

Kindness will not only make language learning more enjoyable and effective, but also help participants develop the ability to support others, and to work with someone else, helping each other to achieve a common target, qualities that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Resilience and Determination

Speaking a foreign language can sometimes feel challenging. Spellian encourages students to get out of their comfort zone, don’t be afraid of speaking a different language, seeing mistakes just as what they are, a great opportunity to learn, and persevere. With every conversation, they become more confident, and determined learners.

Independence

Spellian participants take responsibility for connecting to their sessions, communicating with their partner, and managing their commitment throughout the programme. In doing so, they develop independence, initiative, and organisational skills that will benefit them far beyond language learning.
